The Hyundai Elantra has been one of the best selling cars globally having sold more than 11.5 million units. Hyundai had launched the fifth generation Elantra in 2012 and it was, at one point, the best-seller in the segment. The D-segment has shrunk as the craze for SUVs has caught up in recent times. Inspite of this, Hyundai has launched the sixth generation model in India and the Koreans aim to lead the D-segment again. Hyundai claims that this is the best Elantra they have ever made. The front apron gets redesigned projector head lights with LED guide light, which flanks the modified chrome-finished radiator grille. The revised body-coloured front bumper features revamped fog lights with black housings along with air intakes. The fog lights are placed towards the deeper end of the bumper. Body-painted outside rear view mirrors come with integrated turn indicator. Apart from the power-adjusting and power-folding functions, the ORVMs are also bestowed with the electrical heating function. R16 alloy wheels are shod to all four silica tyres and are available as a standard fitment across the range.Chrome finishing has been done generously on the outside, which includes chrome outside door handles and beltline chrome moulding. Other exterior fitments available on the saloon include a printed glass antenna and an exhaust with chrome finisher. The curvaceous contours of the saloon make it stand apart as far as the designing is concerned, hence making it one of the most visually-appealing premium saloons in D segment. Bestowed with the new generation fluidic design language, Elantra’s silhouette runs smoothly from front to the rear. Rear is equally captivating as the front fascia. Keeping in line with recent Hyundais, the new Elantra packs a handsome cabin. The upholstery uses black leatherette while the dash gets a silver finish. The glovebox is a cooled unit and, as is the norm nowadays, the car gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The user interface is new and improved over the units in the Creta and the screen is also bigger and crisper. The system also gets sat-nav as well as both Android Auto and Car Play - a first for a sub-20 lakh car. The new 3-spoke steering wheel has audio controls, cruise control, Bluetooth calling and trip computer related functions. The analogue dials themselves are new and house a plethora of information like distance to empty, instant fuel efficiency average driving time, average speed and so on. I particularly liked the way the cabin was put together with no uneven panel gaps or any rough edges.
Dual zone climate control continues but now comes with a sync function which matches driver and passenger side temperatures. The driver now gets a 10-way adjustable power seat but there is no memory function. The top model offers an anti-pinch sunroof. The much-loved ventilation for the front seats is carried forward and works like a charm to cool your lower back and back-side. Adding ventilation function for the rear passengers would have upped the luxury quotient by a fair bit. While the front seats are comfortable, the rear could do with better underthigh support.The stylish sloping roof also cuts into the headroom for taller occupants but this should not be of bother to passengers below 6ft. The 458-litre trunk is a significant improvement over the older car's 420 litres but is still smaller than most rivals.
The 2017 Elantra comes powered by two all-new powertrains. The volume engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that runs an Atkinson combustion cycle while producing 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. The engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual (base SE trim only) or a new six-speed automatic.
Optionally, the Elantra offers a new 1.4-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder on its Eco trim. Like the trim level suggests, this turbo four isn’t a rocket. It’s purpose is to achieve the best fuel economy possible. Producing 128 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque, the engine sends power to the front wheels via Hyundai’s EcoShift seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. All this is designed to net the Elantra Eco 35 mpg combined. It has yet to be determined is the EPA’s testing will back up Hyundai’s projections.Regardless of trim, the Elantra comes with selectable Drive Modes. They include Eco, Normal, and Sport – all changeable via a center console-mounted button.
DRIVING DYNAMICS ;
The biggest improvement in this Elantra over the previous generation model comes in the driving dynamics department. Hyundai has used 53% ‘Advanced High Strength Steel’ in the body frame (previous generation used only 21%) which makes the structure more rigid and lighter. This translates into improved handling characteristics. The car feels more planted at high speeds and doesn’t feel nervous around corners. Though the handling has greatly improved, it still doesn’t beat the benchmark set by the Elantra’s German rivals. Leaving hardcore enthusiasts aside, these kind of dynamics will be happily accepted by the majority.
Ride quality has been good with the previous generation model and Hyundai has further improved it. Ride is cushioned even on undulated surfaces. The damping is much better now and you can feel this at both low and high speeds. There is no bouncy feeling and even when the car is fully loaded, the suspension does a good job of keeping the passengers comfortable. Braking performance is progressive with good pedal feel and bite. Hyundai has also added the ‘Hill Hold’ function which prevents the car from rolling backwards on a slope.
SAFETY FEATURES ;
Hyundai has spoilt its car buyer by offering the best in class features for all its models across various segments. Apart from the sun-roof, ventilated front seats and 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat we mentioned above, the features list is breathtaking. So, we’ll just be mentioning some more of them here. Up front you get dual zone air-conditioning so the driver and co-passenger can tune the temperature individually. Another feature I must talk about is the Smart Trunk. Say, your hands are full with bags and you approach the rear of the Elantra with the car’s key in your pocket, the boot lid will pop open automatically in 3 seconds, giving you access to its 458-litre storage sapce. Smart! Coming to safety, the new Elantra gets an impressive six airbags (in higher variants), ABS and EBD, along with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hill-Start Assist which prevents the car from rolling back on an inclined road. Now it not just uses more high tensile steel (AHSS) which helps in improving the rigidity of the body and, in turn, the car’s dynamics.
The new Hyundai Elantra hasn't rewritten the rule book for executive sedans; in fact, its formula has stayed unchanged - striking looks, lots of equipment, value for money and capable, refined engines. But it's also improved dramatically in most areas and also gained a couple of new skills along the way. Dynamically, it's a quantum leap over its predecessor and a new benchmark for Hyundai in India, with a ride quality that can, at last, rival what its European rivals offer; shame the handling hasn't quite caught up yet, but it too has improved. On the equipment front, yes, it isn't the revolution its predecessor was, but you can't say it leaves you wanting either. The feature-rich touchscreen, in particular, is just superb. It's got a pair of very different, albeit both capable in their own right, engine options each with an auto or a manual, so there should be something for everyone. Space and comfort are generous, the striking looks will still be a big draw, but what really makes it worth it is the price, which is still a notch below cars from Europe. It just goes to show, it's possible to have an attractive proposition in the executive sedan segment yet.
